AN OPEN SHELL

AN OPEN SHELL

The pavilion is a segmented wooden shell composed of planar hexagonal modules, designed as an antifunicular ribbed structure with multiple entrances that open it to its surroundings

FORM FINDING AND RATIONALIZATION

The computational workflow links the pavilion’s structural behavior, geometric definition, and fabrication constraints, allowing its complex curvature to be resolved through a modular timber system.

The computational workflow links the pavilion’s structural behavior, geometric definition, and fabrication constraints, allowing its complex curvature to be resolved through a modular timber system.

The geometry was developed through computational form-finding, using its structural behavior to define the curvature of the shell. The surface was then rationalized into planar hexagonal modules for fabrication.

FROM PANEL TO STRUCTURE

FROM PANEL TO STRUCTURE

The shell is assembled from planar plywood panels supported by timber beams and connected through a system of tendons. The assembly translates the geometric logic of the pavilion into a lightweight structural system.
